Holier Than Thou – February 10, 2009

Remember this guy? He’s Democrat Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania. He’s famous, not so much for serving about seventeen terms as Pennsylvania’s Congressman, but for his outrageous charges he made that U.S. Marines deliberately killed 15 innocent unarmed Iraqi civilians, including seven women and three children, “in cold blood.”

Murtha had been a very vocal opponent of the war in Iraq before he disputed the military’s account of what transpired in Haditha, Iraq on November 19, 2005, saying, “there was no firefight, there was no IED that killed these innocent people. Our troops overreacted because of the pressure on them, and they killed innocent civilians in cold blood.”

Of the eight Marines charged with the killings in Haditha, seven have been exonerated with charges dismissed and the eighth is waiting for the conclusion of his trial. At least two of these Marines have filed suit against Murtha for slander. One suit brought against Murtha by Staff Sgt. Frank Wuterich is on hold because Murtha has appealed a lower court’s order that he must sit for a deposition. (Why doesn’t he want to give his deposition in this case?)

Rep. Murtha is also the critic who insisted that ” the war in Iraq was not going as advertised, was flawed and wrapped in illusion. …It is evident that continued military action in Iraq is not in the best interest of the U.S., the Iraqi people or the Persian Gulf Region.” (That was before their first succussful free elections and certainly before their most recent violence-free elections run by the Iraqi government without the U.S. in control.)

He is the “poweful” chairman of the House Appropriations subcommittee on defense with close ties to Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

With this as a backdrop, consider the breaking news on ABC’s News website, http://www.abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=6840438&page=1, February 9, 2009.

“EXCLUSIVE: FBI Raided Lobbying Firm Connected to Murtha”

It seems that the FBI has raided the offices of the PMA Group headquartered in Virgnia. This is a lobbying firm founded by former Murtha aide, Paul Magliochetti. Millions of dollars of taxpayer funds have been going to PMA clients in earmarks, while thousands of dollars in campaign donations have been coming in to Murtha, who said his earmarking has helped revive his economically depressed district. (not to mention his campaign war chest)

This is the second company enjoying a cozy relationship with Murtha that has been raided by the FBI recently. The FBI, the IRS and the Defense Criminal Investigative Service searched the office of Kuchera Industries and Kuchera Defense Systems in January, including the homes of the founders. Murtha has funnelled over $100 million in earmarks to Kuchera. (Connect the dots. Murtha chairs the House Appropriations committee on DEFENSE and Kuchera Defense Systems gets earmarks.)

“The FBI is showing a lot of interest in a lot of people around Murtha,” said Keith Ashdown of Taxpayers for Common Sense. “If I was in Murtha’s camp, I would not be sleeping at night.”

The response from Murtha’s spokesman? “I’m not going to waste my time with sensationalized journalism”, said Matthew Mazonkey.

It looks like Rep. Murtha has been beating up on our military, while making money “appropriating” earmarks to defense systems companies and close associates’ lobbying firms.

I think he should sit for that deposition in Staff Sgt. Wuterich’s suit and account for his statements and come clean about appropriating millions of dollars to his friends at taxpayers’ expense. All of his campaign contributions should be investigated thoroughly. Americans are tired of paying high taxes and getting ripped off by politicians and their friends.

Are these the people we want to entrust with 8 or 9 trillion dollars of our money to “appropriate” as they see fit? I don’t think so.
