Christopher Columbus – Part 2 – December 03, 2008

Very few, if any, know that Christopher Columbus was Jewish by heritage. And not very many know that he was a Christian of the Catholic faith, and very strong in his faith. It’s not included in school textbooks today, nor brought out in media documentaries. But knowing that he descended from Spanish Jews who converted to Catholicism to save their lives, and two generations later were strong in their Christian faith, sheds a great deal of light on a divine purpose for America, the new land that Columbus was led to by God’s Holy Spirit, as Columbus recorded in his personal diary.

Before we can see any providential significance to this event in world history, we must first be familiar with conditions in the rest of the world at the time and for centuries preceding October 12, 1492. Beginning with Moses and the Israelites in the wilderness after escaping Pharoah of Egypt and crossing the Red Sea, the Jews have celebrated seven feasts or festivals every year. These feasts were designed and ordered by God and explained to Moses when he met Him up on Mount Sinai. (See Leviticus 23 in the Old Testament of the Bible)

In addition to the feasts and the Ten Commandments, God instructed Moses and the Israelites to construct a special and peculiar tent and dedicate it to Him. It was His dwelling place among the people. He manifested a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night over His tent. When God moved the cloud, the people moved with it. As long as the cloud stayed, they stayed. The cloud and fire led the Israelites through the wilderness to the land of milk and honey. But the greatest purpose of the tent was that this was where God dwelt among His people.

The seven feasts have been observed ever since those wilderness days and still are today all over the world wherever Jews dwell. The first three are observed in the spring and the fourth in the summer. The last three are celebrated in the fall. The seventh and final feast is The Feast of Tabernacles, which usually occurs in our month of October and is celebrated for seven days. (The Jewish calendar used a lunar/thirty day count, meaning that it doesn’t always fall on the same day on our calendar.)

“Tabernacles” is a big word that means “tents”. The Israelites lived in tents those forty years they wandered in the wilderness, and this feast commemorates that life. But all the feasts have an historical commemoration and a spiritual one. God used them to teach the Jews something spiritual. It was really the most important aspect of these feasts.

“Tabernacles” also means “dwelling and sanctuary”. The Israelites dwelt in tents and God dwelt among His people in His Tabernacle/Tent. The purpose of the Feast of Tabernacles is to observe and celebrate that God dwells among His people. Yes, Jews commemorate those days they dwelt in tents and God provided their every material need, but the greater theme is that God Almighty chose to come down and dwell among His people in a tent in their midst.

“…make a sanctuary for Me, and I will dwell among them.” Exodus 25:8

Christopher Columbus left Spain in August, 1492, arriving in the New World, America, on October 12, 1492, which was the final and seventh day of the Feast of Tabernacles. He discovered what was to become the safest place on Earth for the persecuted Jews to dwell – a virtual land of milk and honey. Columbus, a Spanish Jew, discovered America on the seventh day of the seventh Jewish feast (really God’s feast), a day on which Jewish priests in the temple in Jerusalem would form a procession and march around the altar seven times praying for salvation and prosperity, both of which the Jewish people of seven continents have found in America.

(This is all recorded history. I invite everyone to research this subject because there is much, much more that could be brought out if time and space permitted.)

THERE ARE THOSE WHO WANT TO SEPARATE AMERICANS FROM THEIR JUDEO-CHRISTIAN HERITAGE. AMERICA HAS AFFORDED EACH OF US THE FREEDOM OF RELIGION, BUT WE MUST FIGHT TO KEEP IT. WE MUST NOT REMAIN SILENT WHILE A HANDFUL OF ATHEISTS ROB US OF OUR RIGHT TO BE CHRISTIAN IN PUBLIC AND NOT CONFINED TO CLOSET CHRISTIANITY OR JUDAISM. DO YOUR PART – EVERYTHING YOU CAN – TO PRESERVE OUR FREEDOM OF RELIGION.
