Democratic Amnesia – May 07, 2008

CBS – 60 Minutes – February 2007 – Steve Kroft interviews Barack and Michelle Obama. He asks her if she worries about Barack’s safety. Her reply:

“I don’t lose sleep over it because the realities are that, you know, as a black man, you know, Barack can get shot going to the gas station. (Is that a racist statement?)

Race has been on Michelle Obama’s mind for quite a long time. Michelle is from South Side Chicago . She graduated from Princeton University in 1985 with a B.A. in Sociology and a minor in African American Studies. She left the world of corporate law and worked for Chicago’s mayor Richard Daly. (Even though Barack met her as an intern at the law firm where she was his mentor, it is reported that he didn’t have any interest in corporate law, either.) Taking a look at her journey down this road and the influences in her life help us understand her public statements better, and perhaps more ciritical to the public debate, how she influences her husband, Barack Obama.

The emphasis is mine, as well as the blue comments.

“Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community” by Michelle LaVaughn Robinson, Princeton, New Jersey, 1985, (c) Michelle LaVaughn Robinson, 1985. (This is what was on her mind then.)

“Conyers and Wallace (1976) embody the idea of Blacks working with Whites as a plausible political and economic ideology about relations between the Black and White communities. Their discussion focuses on representative integration which is the integration of Black official into various aspects of politics. They discuss problems which face these Black officials who must persuade the White community that they are above the issues of race and that they are representing all people and not just Black people.” (Sound familiar?)

Footnote on this page cites Stokely Carmichael and Charles Hamilton, Black Power: The Politics of Liberation in America, (New York: Vintage Books),. 1967: p. 44.

This was four years before she met Barack Obama, in 1989.

Michelle told the Chicago Tribune that every Sunday the family attends services at the Trinity United Church of Christ.

Television pundits say they don’t know how much influence this church or it’s former pastor has had on Obama because they don’t know how often he attended. Michelle stated that the family attended every Sunday. Over twenty years, that’s 1,040 Sundays. If he missed a few every year, it would still be a high number of attendances and, like most church members, he probably attended services there other than Sundays. Obama has probably heard Jeremiah Wright speak over a thousand times. Influence? Yes, unless Obama sat there like a wooden soldier absorbing nothing. That would make him a phony or hypocrit in his church. Is that a qualification we admire in presidents of the United States? I don’t.

February 19, 2008:

“…and let me tell you something, for the first time in my adult lifetime, I’m really proud of my country…” (which country, Africa or America? She was born and raised in America, but for twenty years she has regularly attended a church that calls Africa the mother country and is proud to be Africa-centered.)

From the New Yorker interview in 2008:

“…we’re a country that is just downright mean, we are guided by fear, we’re a nation of cynics, sloths, and complacents. We have become a nation of struggling folks who are barely making it every day,” (What in the world is she talking about? She, her husband, her pastor, and many others in her world have made it quite successfully. Shall I mention the Obama’s expensive home or that of Jeremiah Wright in a gated community? Should we mention the $235 million Obama has raised in his campaign? Where did all that money come from if Michelle is correct in her assessment of America? She’s not. The lines outside the stores when the $60 Grand Theft Auto 4 came out was very long all over the country. Many of the waiting customers were black. The most common purchaser of very expensive sports shoes are black. )

“The truth is, in order to get things like universal health care and a revamped education system, then someone is going to have to give up a piece of their pie so that someone else can have more.” (Will she be giving up or does she mean us? Re-distribution of wealth – where does that idea come from? Socialism uses government power to redistribute wealth.)

According to bio.com, Barack moved to Chicago after he graduated college in 1985 and began working as a community organizer. It was during this time that he started attending Trinity United and before he met Michelle. It was also during this time that he visited his family in Kenya. By the time he and Michelle met, he had already been grappling with his race identity. When he met Jeremiah Wright, he found someone he described as his spiritual mentor, influencing his book, The Audacity of Hope, which was the title of one of Wright’s sermons.

Michelle must have been a perfect mate for Barack, considering her opinions on race. She reinforces what Wright has taught him. In the end, Barack will have much difficulty convincing intelligent people that he doesn’t share Wright’s beliefs. He actually married someone who has expressed hints of the same attitude on race.

Obama spoke at the Democratic National Convention in 2004 and said,

“We worship an awesome God in the blue states, and we don’t like federal agents poking around our libraries in the red states,” he said. “We coach Little League in the blue states, and yes, we’ve got some gay friends in the red states. There are patriots who opposed the war in Iraq, and there are patriots who supported the war in Iraq. We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the Stars and Stripes, all of us defending the United States of America.”

I guess he forgot that he refused to wear a flag lapel pin after 9/11. I guess he forgot about William Ayers stomping on the Stars and Stripes. It was well publicized in Chicago. I guess he forgot Jeremiah Wright’s teachings which he heard a thousand times. I guess he forgot his own wife’s views, which he must have heard at some time. His “We are one people” speech is taken from page 27 in Michelle’s college thesis. I remember another politician who couldn’t recall. Her name is Hillary Clinton. The Democrat Party is suffering from amnesia.
