“In an airport hanger in Phoenix just now, I asked Senator McCain whether he thought Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity could harm his chances in November if they keep up their anti-McCain crusade beyond the point that he secures the GOP nomination. “I don’t know the answer to that,” Mccain said. “I hope at some point we can just calm down a little bit and see if there are areas we can agree on for the good of the party and for the good of the country. I think they’ve made their case against me pretty eloquently.” McCain smiled a bit when he said that.”

(Jay Carney is TIME’s Washington bureau chief. He has covered the Clinton and Bush 43 White Houses as well as Congress.)

John McCain, famous for McCain-Feingold, a law that makes it illegal for certain groups to speak out right before an election, has now told us to CALM DOWN and (in my words) get in line behind him. Once again, McCain expects us to shut up and follow what he wants. McCain asks that we see if there are areas we can agree on for the good of the country and the party.

I ask him the same question. Why don’t you , John McCain, calm down and follow the base of your party, if indeed, you want the good of the party and the good of your country? The Republican Party has a platform, some of which McCain has abandoned. Instead of asking the voters of his party to trash the platform and follow him, I’m asking him to trash his oppositon to those principles and follow his party’s base. He is supposed to represent US and our values. I would remind Sen. McCain that we are not here to serve him. He is there to serve US and to represent US. Now, Sen. McCain, do what the voters want and selflessly serve the people.
